History:

2008:

The 2007-08 season marked yet another great year for Ohio Lightning Wrestling.  In only the second year as a Youth and Jr. High Club team, Ohio Lightning placed many wrestlers at both the OAC Jr. High and Ohio Youth State Tournaments including crowning a State Champion.  Under the direction of Coach Joe Hickin, Team Lightning was also supported by Coaches Don Havener, Mike Havener, Paul Charvat, and Rick Kollman.

In the second year of the Jr. High Club team, the club placed 6 wrestlers at the OAC Jr. High State Tournament and another 6 OAC Jr. High State Qualifiers.  Throughout the season the Club team competed at several very challenging competitions including the VAC Virginia Challenge Duals, Border Wars Christmas Duals, CVCA Middle School Duals, and Catholic Invitational Tournament among others.  Placing at the OAC Jr. High State Tournament were Matt Meadows (4th at 138 lbs.),

David Gray (5th at 146 lbs.), Matt Dobben (6th @ 84 lbs.), Michael Ratay (7th at 90 lbs.), Nathan Rosenberger (8th at 146 lbs.), and Daniel Crowder (8th at 176 lbs.).

The Ohio Lightning Youth Team finished an amazing 7th place overall out of over 100 teams at the Ohio Youth State Tournament, crowning the club's first State Champion in Andy Dobben at 64 lbs.  Finishing as State Runner-Up was Rick Kollman at 100 lbs.  Ricky Simonelli (3rd at 76 lbs.) and Zak Dobben (5th @ 90 lbs.) also were State Placers for team Ohio Lightning.  The youth team trained hard throughout the season competing weekly with Ohio Youth and also participating in youth tournaments at Minerva, Rootstown, and Medina Highland throughout the season.

The Ohio Lightning National Team continued to be very busy competing at many national events across the country at both the Middle School and High School levels.  The Ohio Lightning National Team competed again in the USA Wrestling National Middle School Duals in Danville, Illinois taking home the title of Consolation Champions finishing as undefeated All-Americans were Mike Rix, Nathan Skonieczny, and Nick Tavanello.  The middle school team also traveled to Norfalk, Virginia to participate in the VAC Challenge Duals, Battle Creek, Michigan for the Border Wars Holiday Duals, and Salisbury, Maryland for the NHSCA National Duals. 

The High School team continued to wrestle the best competition in the country by participating in many National Events.  Ohio Lightning was the Team Champion at the Pennsylvania Air Dome Duals in Muncy, Pennsylvania finishing 7-0 as a team.  The team also competed in the AAU Disney Duals where Kyle Warner, Tyler Powers, Alex Utley, and Beau Wenger finished as All-American Medalists.  The High School Team also competed at the Brute Scholastic Showcase in York, PA, the NHSCA National Duals in Salisbury, Marland, the Bad Karma Duals in Sharon, PA, and in a league at Suplex City in Mt. Gilead, OH.

2007:

2007 proved to be an exciting year for Team Ohio Lightning.  Ohio Lightning started a Regular Season Youth and Middle School Club Team for the 2006-07 season.  Coach Joe Hickin took the nod as Team Ohio Lightning's Director and Head Coach. 

The Ohio Lightning Youth Team competed in the Ohio Youth Wrestling League and finished with two placers at the Ohio Youth State Tournament in Andy Dobben (5th at 64 lbs.) and Dylan Kager (5th at 86 lbs.).  The team overall advanced 5 wrestlers to the State Tournament and 10 Wrestlers to the District Tournament.  At the OAC Grade School State Championships, Team Ohio Lightning Members Andy Dobben placed 4th at 60 lbs., Dylan Kager placed 6th at 85 lbs., and Nicholas Havener placed 6th at 100 lbs.

The new Middle School Club team competed at multiple events throughout the season including the Cleveland Duals, West Virginia Parkersburg Duals, and CVCA Duals, to name a few.  The club had two wrestlers place at the OAC Jr. High State Tournament in Alex Utley (3rd at 146 lbs.) and Cheney Mattarese (4th at 132 lbs.).

The Ohio Lightning National Team continued its run of success when they brought two teams to USA Wrestling's National Middle School Duals in Danville, Illinois.  The two teams consisted of members of the Middle School Club team and other wrestlers from throughout Northeast Ohio.  Ohio Lightning Black won the Silver Division winning five duals overall.  Wins came over Illinois Top Dawgs (60-27),  Ohio Stallions White (86-10), Indiana Blue (59-22), Ketucky (66-22), and Ohio Prodigy (54-32).  The Black team finished with six individual All-Americans in Mitch Newhouse, Matt Dobben, Tylan Coleman, Alex Utley, Zach Maxworthy, and Greydon Pavlik.  Sam Wakser earned All-American honors for the Red team.

The Ohio Lightning High School National Team continued to stay busy traveling all over the country.  The Ohio Lightning High School group consisted of wrestlers from all over the state of Ohio that wanted to gain the experience of wreslting at a national level.  The high school team took trips to the Brute Scholastic Showcase in Dover, Delaware, the AAU Disney Duals in Orlando, Florida, the Bad Karma Duals in Sharon, Pennsylvania and NHSCA National Duals in Salisbury, Maryland.

2006:

In 2006, Team Ohio Lightning participated in several National Wrestling Events throughout the country.  It was an exciting year for Ohio Lightning.  Coach Joe Hickin led the Elementary Division Team, which competed at the NHSCA National Wrestling Duals.  Ohio Lightning Middle School continued to show success and wrestled at the USAW National Duals in Danville, Illinois and the NHSCA Duals in Salisbury, Maryland.  For the older wrestlers, Ohio Lightning High School took successful trips out to the BRUTE Scholastic Showcase in Delaware, the NHSCA National Wrestling Duals in Maryland, and the AAU Disney Duals in Florida.

The Middle School Team wrestled at the always tough USA Wrestling National Middle School Duals in Danville, Illinois.  Ohio Lightning consisted of 21 Middle School and Grade School wrestlers who finished 5th in the Silver Bracket.  The team had big wins over Ohio Stallions, Kentucky, Nebraska, and tied with South Dakota.   The 2006 team had two Undefeated All-Americans in Cody Garbrandt (110) and Cody Lamberg (160)!!!

The NHSCA National Duals had quite possibly the two best teams in the entire history of Ohio Lightning.  The Ohio Lightning Elementary team had a very impressive youth line-up, with 2006 OAC Grade School State Champions George DiCamillo and Tyler Goudy;  Runners-Up Dean Heil, Matt Dobben, Josiah Clemens, and Vince Picket; 3rd Place Finishers Zavier Meeks, Domenic Abounader, Matt Meadows, and Bryan Hefflinger; and 4th Place Finishers Anthony Collica and Zack Srock; along with Joe Phillips, Daniel Griffith, Calvin Windom.

One of the three Middle School teams, grades 7th-9th, Ohio Lightning Black had a very impressive line-up as well.  The Black Team had 2 OHSAA State Placers (Seth Horner & Andrew Tumlin), 2 other OHSAA State Qualifiers (Scott Mattingly and Nick Heflin) , a 2006 Jr. High State Champion (Cody Lamberg), a 2005 Jr. High State Champion (Zack Goins), two 2006 Jr. High State Runners-Up (Kyle Warner & Cody Garbrandt), along with all 6 remaining wrestlers 2005 Jr. High State Placers (Justin Hall, Louis Greco, Zach Garbrandt, Justin Wharton, Andrew Phillips, & Tyler Houska)

Ohio Lightning also brought two other Middle School teams: Ohio Lightning Red & White.

Overall, the Elementary team finished in 4th Place.  After defeating Virginia Thunder (46-16) in the quarter-finals, they fell to the Central PA Stars (26-34) in the semifinals.  Then in the placement match lost by one point to the Shippensburg Renegades(33-34).  Both the Black and the Red middle school teams made the Championship Bracket finishing in the top eight.  The Black team came home with a third place finish after dominating the very tough Ragin' Rasins PA (61-7) in the quarterfinals, they fell to the rival New Jersey Eagles (23-34) in the semis.  The Black team went on to defeat the SV River Boys PA (35-24) in the third place match.  The Middle School White team went on to finish with a winning record!

 

2005

In 2005, Team Ohio Lightning Middle School participated at the USAW National Middle School Duals, in Danville, Illinois and the NHSCA National Wrestling Duals in Salisbury, Maryland.

The USAW National Team consisted of 13 2005 Jr. High or Grade School State Place Winners and 36 of the 42 team members were Jr. High or Grade School State Qualifiers.

The Black team finished in 7th place overall. Team Ohio Lightning had four All-Americans: Ryan Roch (100), Brett Mellor (120), Cody Lamberg (150), and Travis Miller (275).

The NHSCA National Team in 2005 finished higher than any other team in Ohio Lightning history. The Black team finished 2nd of 30 teams. Ohio Lightning Black cruised to six strait dual victories over: VA Kempersville (59-4), Delaware (65-7), Pennsylvania East (34-15), Pennsylvania West (38-18), Virginia Black (51-11), and Southeast PA (43-25) before falling to the New Jersey Eagles (33-34) by one point for the National Championship. The team was led by six UNDEFEATED wrestlers!! Johnny Papesh (103), Tony Jameson (119), Kirk Tank (152), Keith Witt (160), Cody Magrum (171), and Brock Kirian (189).
